And it all started with dropping out of Harvard
In the mid-1920s, Edwin Land was a young, talented student who dropped out of Harvard in pursuit of his dreams. Like many pioneers before him, he went to New York. He had no funds, but a head full of ideas. He sneaked into Columbia University's lab to use their equipment to test his theories. He invented his discovery - an inexpensive polarizing film - before he returned to Harvard. In 1929 Edward already had his invention, inexpensive light polarization filters, patented and began producing them for sunglasses, car headlights and photography. In 1937 founded the Polaroid Corporation, which gained worldwide fame for its 20th century invention - the instant camera. Edwin Land's discoveries are still the basis for how polarized lenses are made today.
